THE BLOG OF DRU #12: THE RIDE IS OVER

This ain’t 2016 anymore.

It’s over. The ride is over.

It was fun while it lasted. It really was. I’m talking about the fighter, not the actual person we have seen over the last 6-7 years or so.

But the bandwagon of Conor McGregor is officially broken down, no pun intended.

I won’t take too much time on this article, because to be honest, there isn’t much left to say about what happened last weekend at UFC 329 (plus I have a lot to do on this fine Saturday. Adulting, y’all LOL). The ill fated comeback didn’t even get off the ground. The buildup leading up to the fight was at a fever pitch. It wasn’t at 2015 levels of craze, but the press conference still showed that he still had “it”. The aura. The charisma. Even the trash talk. Conor still had the juice in those areas. But the fighting aspect? To be fair, we didn’t see much fighting. However, the fighting that we did see, gave us a clue that Conor had zero reason to be back in the octagon, and this was before his knee injury that forced the fight to stop (now we know it’s an ACL injury). He has money, a growing family and still a strong support system from his fanbase. What’s his “why?” That’s the question. Again, it can’t be money or fame (he claims to have given his life to God. Time will tell if that’s legit or just a front).

There’s several reports, including from the man himself, that he wants his final UFC fight on his contract to be against the fighter who he suffered his downfall to, Max Holloway. I’m not fully against this idea, because I really don’t see Conor staying in the UFC beyond this fight. Conor has nearly zero leverage for a new contract under his own terms. Even if he wins, what would be next?

But, for the short term perspective, he can take the time to heal, rehab, and try to fight again to see if he can go out on his own terms.

For this writer, this will be the last time I write about Conor McGregor.

Unless, of course, he gives me a “why” to write about him in the future.
